O’ahu is the third largest island of the Hawaiian Islands group. Also the most populous, O’ahu is known as the gathering place. Some of the most well-known features found on Oʻahu include Waikīkī, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Hanauma, Kāneʻohe Bay, Kailua Bay, North Shore. This adventure covers spending time in Wakiki, exploring Diamond Head, a central and windward drive up to the North Shore.
The flights from LAX were relatively cheap when booked in advance. The while I like to look around for various deals and will sometimes book hotels separate for flights I recommend Expedia. The site is a great way to explore different flight hotel car rental options, and can spearhead your efforts to find a baseline for the best deals.
Things you might want to know about landing in Honolulu. I did not get lei’d as I left the gangway. Instead we were led out to the airport and caught the shuttle over to the car rental place. Being on a budget, I booked a basic rental car, nothing fancy. Once I reached the kiosk and gave the lady my reservation number she immediately told me for only 7 more dollars a day I could be cruising around the island in a Ford Mustang Convertible.
Of course I took the upgrade, it after all Hawaii. Who does not want to be driving around in a convertible. It was a treat for me as well because if I was not trying to reduce my carbon footprint this would be a beast of a car to own. Classic American muscle in a modern world!
Map in hand I headed to my Hotel down in Waikiki. Traffic on the island is absolutely crazy. I thought L.A traffic was some sort of exercise in futility, there are only a few ways into downtown Waikiki from the main O’ahu freeways so they back up rapidly as rush hour approaches. Needless to I eventually made it to the Hotel. The Royal Kuhio, close enough to the beach and surrounded by lots to do at night.
The first taste of the Hawaiian spirit that I got to savour was when we walked down to the beach from the hotel. I knew I had made the right choice to travel to O’ahu in December, and you can bet I will be doing it again.
